Description

Enjoy this delicious Layered Boston Cream Trifle Dessert, a perfect combination of sponge cake, vanilla pudding, chocolate ganache, and whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf Sponge Cake or Vanilla Pound Cake (about 9x5 inches)
  • 2 packages Vanilla Pudding (3.4 oz each)
  • 4 cups Whole Milk (for pudding)
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream (for ganache)
  • 1.5 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 2 cups Whipped Cream (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional, for whipped cream)
  • 2 tablespoons Powdered Sugar (optional, for whipped cream)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the vanilla pudding mix and milk. Mix until thickened, then refrigerate for about 10 minutes to firm up.

  2. Make the Chocolate Ganache: In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until just simmering. Remove from heat and pour over the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Let sit for a minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Allow to cool slightly.

  3. Prepare the Whipped Cream: If making homemade, beat the heavy cream with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons powdered sugar until soft peaks form.

  4. Layer the Trifle: Cut the sponge cake into 1-inch cubes. In a trifle dish, start by spreading a layer of pudding at the bottom. Add a layer of cake cubes, followed by a layer of chocolate ganache. Repeat the layers: pudding, cake, and ganache until the ingredients are used, typically ending with the chocolate ganache on top.

  5. Finish with Whipped Cream: Pipe or spread whipped cream over the top layer of ganache. You can create decorative swirls or peaks if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute the sponge cake with store-bought ladyfingers or savoiardi for a different texture.
  • For an espresso flavor, lightly soak the cake cubes in coffee before layering.
  • You can prepare the trifle a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Add the whipped cream just before serving to maintain its texture.
  • Consider adding chocolate shavings or cocoa powder as a garnish for an extra touch.
