- 2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
- 1 cup caramel sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 package puff pastry sheets (2 sheets), thawed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Flour (for dusting)
- Optional: sea salt for topping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine diced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Mix well until the apples are evenly coated.
- Caramel Addition: Add 1/2 cup of caramel sauce to the apple mixture. Stir to combine.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out each puff pastry sheet to smooth out the creases. Cut each sheet into 6 equal rectangles.
- Assemble Hand Pies: Place a generous tablespoon of the apple mixture onto one half of each pastry rectangle. Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg to act as glue. Fold the pastry over the filling and seal the edges by pressing them with a fork.
- Egg Wash and Baking: Place the hand pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash. Cut a small slit on top of each pie to allow steam to escape.
- Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
- Drizzle and Serve: Once baked, allow the pies to cool slightly. Drizzle with the remaining caramel sauce and sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt if desired.
Notes
- Make sure the puff pastry is well chilled when working with it; this ensures a flakier crust.
- For a more decadent flavor, consider adding a small cube of caramel inside each pie before sealing.
- If you prefer a less sweet pie, reduce the amount of caramel sauce in the filling.
- Serve warm for the best flavor, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
